Which nations failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup?

Italy! Italy! Italy!

Okay, we’re still not over the disappointment of losing to Italy in the Euro 2020 final. Italy deserved the win, but for an hour (before Italy equalised), we were convinced this was it – England was about to lift a trophy for the first time since the World Cup win in 1966! So close! The thought of the game still brings tears to our eyes. Back to the question – without a doubt – Italy are the most prominent nation to have failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Here are some other teams that failed to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar. Sadly, we’ll miss some of the world’s finest players.

  • Norway – While Norway are pretty average (being kind), they do have a certain Erling Haaland, arguably the best striker in the world.
  • Sweden – Usually, Sweden qualifies for the Euros and World Cups. However, they fell short this time, meaning there will be no dream return for Zlatan Ibrahimovic – a true legend of the game.
  • Hungary – Perhaps not a genuine threat to the bigger teams, Hungary are improving quickly. They recently beat England 1-0 in the Nations League, and they proved difficult opponents at Euro 2020 too.
  • Austria – Always a tough team to beat, Austria, now led by Ralf Rangnick, failed to reach the World Cup in Qatar. Perhaps they are targeting Euro 2024?
  • Egypt – The World Cup is the biggest stage in football and sadly, Mohammad Salah and his Egyptian teammates won’t be at Qatar this year. It’s very sad, especially as they lost to Senegal – the same team that beat them in the final of the 2022 African Cup of Nations.
  • Columbia – Very surprisingly, Columbia fell short of qualification and won’t be at the World Cup this year. No Luis Suarez. No Rafael Santos Borre. No Davinson Sanchez. Some big players will be missed by fans around the world.

Oh, did we mention that Italy didn’t qualify for the 2022 World Cup? Thought so – just checking!

Who won the last World Cup?

Hosted in Russia, the 2018 World Cup was won by France. The team in blue beat an over-achieving Croatia side 4-2 in the final which was played in the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, in front of over 78,000 spectators.

England did pretty well in the 2018 World Cup until they lost to Croatia in the semi-finals. Despite getting so far, it was without doubt the easiest route to the semis that any genuine “contender” could have dreamt of! Columbia in the last 16, Sweden in the quarters and Croatia in the semis! You couldn’t have asked for a better route to the final. We genuinely thought football was coming home until our hearts were broken – again!

Who are the bookies backing to lift the 2022 World Cup trophy?

Unsurprisingly, Brazil, the nation with the most World Cup trophies (5) is Skybet’s favourite to lift the 2022 World Cup trophy in Qatar later in the year. France, England and Spain also have a great chance to be victorious as well, so who are you going to back?

Below are the odds for the winners of the 2022 World Cup – correct at the time of posting this article. If you’re taking part in a Qatar World Cup 2022 Sweepstake – you will really want to pick one of the ten teams below! If you pick a different nation out of the hat – you probably have no chance!

  • Brazil – 9/2
  • France – 5/1
  • England – 11/2
  • Spain – 8/1
  • Argentina – 9/1
  • Germany – 11/1
  • Belgium – 12/1
  • Netherlands – 12/1
  • Portugal – 12/1
  • Denmark – 33/1

We’re certainly not experts, but our pick for the tournament is Germany. The Germans are always a serious footballing force that nobody wants to come across in the knock out stages of any competition. England may have beat Germany in Euro 2020, but we can’t see history repeating itself in Qatar. 11/1 seems very generous, and in our opinion, it’s worth a couple of quid!

Which countries do you want to avoid in your office sweepstake?

Everybody loves an underdog story, and football is the sport that has produced some of the most unbelievable results of all time! For example, do you remember when minnows Greece went on to win Euro 2004? The 150/1 outsiders had a competition that’ll live on in history – what a remarkable achievement!

While it’s not on the international stage, we cannot mention football underdog stories without mentioning Leicester City Football Club. At 5000/1, bookies all bud deemed Leicester City as impossible Premier League winners. However, astonishingly, in 2016, they won the league, and the most remarkable underdog story in English, and possibly world football, was born.

With the above in mind, if there is going to be a miracle at the Qatar 2022 World Cup, bookies imply it will come from one of the teams below because the odds suggest they do not have much chance of glory! Therefore, make sure you avoid the following nations when participating in the office 2022 World Cup Sweepstake!

  • Mexico – 100/1
  • Poland – 100/1
  • Serbia – 100/1
  • USA – 100/1
  • Ecuador – 150/1
  • Cameroon – 200/1
  • South Korea – 200/1
  • Tunisia – 200/1
  • Japan – 200/1
  • Ghana – 250/1
  • Morocco – 250/1
  • Canada – 400/1
  • Iran – 500/1
  • Qatar – 500/1

Who will win the Golden Boot at the Qatar World Cup 2022?

Don’t forget, Despite England being knocked out in the semis by Croatia, Harry Kane won the 2018 World Cup Golden Boot with six goals. However, who will win the Golden Boot this time around, in Qatar? According to Skybet, here are the latest odds.

  • Harry Kane (England) – 7/1
  • Kylian Mbappe (France) – 8/1
  • Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) – 12/1
  • Karim Benzema (France) – 14/1
  • Lionel Messi (Argentina) – 14/1
  • Romelu Lukaku (Belgium) – 16/1
  • Neymar (Brazil) – 20/1
  • Raheem Sterling (England) – 20/1
  • Diogo Jota (Portugal) – 25/1
  • Memphis Depay (Netherlands) – 25/1

On Thursday 23rd June, FIFA agreed to allow each nation at this years World Cup to have a squad of 26 – with all players available from the bench. In the past, squads were limited to just 23.
